My job is to manage the range of services available through Southampton Mencap for people of all ages with learning disabilities and their parents, families or carers.
- I work with 6 other staff at the Mencap Centre in Portswood, and over 30 support workers and volunteers who work across the different schemes for children, young people and adults with learning disabilities.
- Part of my job is to support the staff, and to check that things run smoothly.
- I write reports to find the money each year to continue with our services or to start new projects which help people of all ages with learning disabilities and their families or carers.
- I make sure that people know how we spend our money.
- I attend lots of meetings to represent the views of our members and report back to my committee.
- I can support people with learning disabilities and their families or carers to understand their rights and entitlements.
I moved from London to Southampton in 1979, and have been working for Southampton Mencap for 11 years. In that time it has been exciting to see many new services start, including ones that provide social opportunities for people of all ages with learning disabilities, and those that support their families or carers on a regular basis.
